History
of Saint Augustine Catholic Church
St. Augustine Church initiated under the auspices of reverend Daniel P.
Bradley in 1950. He saw the prophetic vision for the
necessity of a second north Tulsa parish. The funds was acquired,
the land was purchased (11 acres) and it was the beginning
of St. Augustine.
Reverend John Strmiska, C.C.S.P. became the church's
first priest. He was known by all as "Father John."
Prior to any structures on the land, St. Augustine's masses were
held at the North Peoria Theater. Mass was later relocated to the
facility currently known as the rectory at St. Augustine. Mass
began the the church in 1952 upon completion of the facility.
Mass continues to be held in the church every Sunday as well as
during the week.
Under the leadership of "Father John" the recreation center was built
with the assistance of the Maybee Foundation, Dewey F. Bartlett,
Anthony F. Keating, Joseph A.
Lafortune, George F. Winters and many generous donors. In 1960
the convent was moved onto the property and is still being utilized.
Reverend James
McGlinchey was the fourth pastor of St. Augustine. He was a very
dedicated leader and served the parish for ten very prosperous years.
Our current ministerial staff includes our devoted priest, Reverend
Kenneth Iheanacho, our committed deacon, Deacon Steve Litwack, and
most faithful, Sister Phyllis Vaske.
Under the leadership of Father Ken, a Youth Center was built and
completed in 2008. The center included classrooms for CCD, an
office and many amenities.
The Pastoral Council Advisory Board was organized in 1969. The
Pastoral Finance Council was established in 1997. There are
several other organizations within the church consisting of the Knights
of St. Peter Claver, Ladies of St. Peter Claver, Junior Daughters of
St. Peter Claver, St. Augustine's Men's Club, St. Augustine's Women's
Club and the loyal members of our choir.
We are very proud of our zealous youth who are always willing to serve
as altar servers, lectors, ushers or any capacity as requested.
They are the future of St. Augustine and we pray the will keep
the history viable.
St. Augustine has always been known as the parish whose parishioners
freely give of their time, talent and gifts. The tradition has
maintained St. Augustine for 60 years and we pray that God will
continue to bestow favor on St. Augustine.
